What a fabulous find! Spook House by Michael West is one of those Horror books that just grabs you from the very first page with characters you really want to get to knowâand some you never want to have the bad luck to run into, thatâs for sure!
One of the bad guys, Cayden, is a gorgeous but incredibly scary sociopath who has a definite way with the ladies. Yikes! Guys like this make me paranoid that everyoneâs a creeper, I swear.
This is a super scary, and sometimes delightfully gross, horror tale about the very lowest of human beings who are willing to do anything (and I mean anything!) to serve a dark master. I feel sorry for the poor innocents right in the path of all that evil. On the other hand, there were some sweet and funny moments in this book, too, like the Chief whose is completely obsessed with Halloween and creating the perfect haunted house. Too funny! It was nice to have a bit of lighthearted fun here and then itâs right back to the wickedly creepy. Parts of this story really squicked me out which is awesome for a horror fan like me. I like to get grossed out, and those pus-filled bugs were hard to take in a really good way.
Oh, and the illustrationsâŚWOW! What an unexpected touch to find in this book! That spider-dog was one of the sickest things Iâve seen; it was so great! Where do authors come up with this stuff? I wonder sometimes just how terrifying their nightmares are if they think up this stuff while they are awake.
The town, the characters, the creatures, and the back story in Spook House are all so wonderfully crafted I swear I have just been on a great adventure and I wish it wasnât over. I am excited how it ended though since I want to learn more about Robbieâs story and I think that is where the next one is headed. Canât wait!
